We recently audited a Sitecore solution for one of the Enterprise client and found that there were no Insert options were set on Standard Values of the templates widely used.
Impact: The content authors mostly duplicate the existing page (worst idea as we duplicate few of the unnecessary datasource items in Sitecore) or has admin access to select from the Template (needs knowledge of the exact template to be used.)
One feature that stands out for its simplicity and effectiveness is Insert Options. Often underutilized by new developers, Insert Options are a powerful tool that should be a staple in any Sitecore implementation. Here’s why Insert Options are essential and why they represent a best practice in template design.
Content Author Guidance
Insert Options provide a clear roadmap for content authors, reducing the likelihood of errors and confusion. By limiting choices to relevant templates, you ensure authors are not overwhelmed and can work more efficiently.
Consistency in Content Structure
Maintaining a consistent content structure is crucial for delivering a seamless user experience. Insert Options enforce this consistency by ensuring only valid child items are created, keeping the content tree organized and predictable.
Improved Maintainability
By defining Insert Options, developers make it easier to troubleshoot and update the content tree. It minimizes the chances of incorrect content relationships, reducing technical debt in the long term.
Better User Experience for Content Editors
A well-defined set of Insert Options improves the editing experience. Content authors spend less time navigating unnecessary options and can focus on creating and managing content effectively.
Hope it helps..!!!
